Answer Engineering Terms, Defined

Plain-English definitions of the terms used across Answer Engineering, including the CQIP methods authored by H D Fraser.

A

Air Gap

In a private answer system, operating with no AI provider connected. Where a question would otherwise go to an AI model, the system hands the operator a composed prompt to use in a model of their choosing, so no content leaves the system on its own.

Answer Audit

The first phase of an Answer Engineering engagement. It establishes how answer engines currently describe an organization, where those answers are wrong or incomplete, and which pages carry commercial or compliance risk.

Answer Engine

A system that responds to a question with a single synthesized answer instead of a list of links. AI assistants and the AI summaries shown in search results are both answer engines.

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)

Preparing content so answer engines can read it and cite it accurately. Answer Engineering includes AEO and extends it to the answers an organization's own website and systems give.

Answer Engineering

The discipline of structuring what an organization knows so machines can read it and quote it correctly. It works outward, on how external answer engines describe the organization, and inward, on how its own website and systems answer the people who ask.

Answer First

A content block type and writing convention in which the primary answer to a page's central question comes before supporting detail, methodology, or calls to action. Defined in 2024 by H D Fraser as part of the CQIP canonical block specification.

B

BYOK (Bring Your Own Key)

Connecting an AI tool to your own account with an AI provider, such as ChatGPT or Claude, instead of a vendor's shared account. You choose the provider, hold the account and its terms, and can disconnect at any time.

C

CQIP (Content Quality and Intelligence Policy)

A platform-agnostic methodology standard for structured content, authored by H D Fraser MSc and first published in 2024 through The Content Framework. It defines canonical content block types, a schema output model, and a content quality framework that apply on any platform.

D

Data Minimization

Collecting and keeping only the personal data needed for a stated purpose. It is one of the core principles of UK GDPR and EU GDPR.

Data Residency

The physical and legal location where data is stored and processed. In Answer Engineering it covers content, analysis, and any answer system logs.

Data Sovereignty

The principle that data is subject to the laws of the jurisdiction where it is held, and that the organization which owns the data decides where that is.

J

JSON-LD

A format for adding structured data to a web page in a script block that machines read and people do not see. It is the format search engines recommend for schema.org markup.

P

Private Answer System

An answer system that responds only from content an organization has approved, running on infrastructure it controls, with each answer traceable to its source page.

R

Retrieval-Only Mode

An operating mode in which every answer comes directly from indexed content or approved question-and-answer pairs. Nothing is generated, and no AI provider is called.

S

Schema Iceberg

A structured content method in which a page carries more question-and-answer pairs in its FAQPage schema than it shows as a visible FAQ. First described and implemented in 2024 by H D Fraser as part of CQIP.

Speakable

A schema.org property that marks the sections of a page best suited to being read aloud or quoted by assistants.

Structured Data

Machine-readable markup, usually schema.org in JSON-LD, that states what a page is about and how its people, organizations, services, and questions relate to each other.

T

The Content Framework

The governing body and methodology behind CQIP, published by H D Fraser at thecontentframework.com.

V

Verified Answer Bank

A set of approved answers held independently of any web page, each reviewed before it can be used. It lets legal and compliance teams control exactly what an answer system says on sensitive subjects.
